Region of Asturias

Traditional food

Fabada a la Asturiana

Asturias is famous for its good food, especially for stews using blood pudding. When in Oviedo, try Morcilla (blood sausage), or Fabada a la Asturiana, made with butter beans and ham or clams.

Local info

When the body of the apostle Saint James (Santiago) was discovered at the beginning of the 9th century in this remote region of the then known world, no one could have imagined that the location of the discovery would become, along with Rome and Jerusalem, one of the most important pilgrim sites in the Christian world.

What to see

Asturias too is the home of ancient rites and beliefs, and this region's popular customs are among the most interesting of Spain. Artisany and gastronomy are of high reputation, you may try excellent sea-food along the coast and, in the mountains, typical dishes such as Fabada, made of a special sort of beans, blood sausage and various cheese specialities, together with a glass of cider.

Major attractions are the Way of Santiago pilgrimage with its numberless monuments and the Ruta de la Plata, "silver route", which both lead through Asturias.
