Traditional food

The food of Euskadi

The food of Euskadi, or Pais Vasco (the Basque Country), represents a major gastronomic segment of Spanish culture, as Basques are considered to be Spain's best cooks. Traditional dishes include Pinchos (canapes similar to tapas, often made with crayfish or cod), Mero a la Donostiarra (sea bass San Sebastian-style), and tuna stews. Merluza Koskera (hake in green sauce) is another hearty dish to sample. Inland, the region's blood sausage and mutton stews are not to be missed.

local info

Baskland is of particular interest for its completely autonomous culture, including a language of its own of quite mysterious origins. Its folklore is autotoctonous too, and you may even watch particular sports like the so-called Basqueball ("pelota vasca").

What to see

San Sebastian

The famous aristocratic beach resort of great reputation during last century still conserves its exclusive and cosmopolitan ambience. Its beautiful buildings and excellent beaches still today make it a privileged holiday destination.
